Lakewood YMCA update
Arbor Day recap and tree planting next steps: Thanks to Todd Twigg, Alex from Urban Forestry and Dorothea from Keep Durham Beautiful, the tree planting on Durham was an enormous success with around 30 trees planted. The turnout was great and Guglhupf and Hardee’s donated food for the event.

TLNA-wide to-do list:

- go live with website/webpage showing pictures from Arbor Day/Lexington; info/resources for volunteers and homeowners; web-sign-up forms
- create a new “comprehensive” tree sign-up form (see attached rough draft, this would be used instead of or in addition to the “tree planting partnership” form)
- create a flyer to accompany the new form to explain the two tree planting programs (see the attached flyer for Lexington St.)
- purchase additional water tanks from Keep Durham Beautiful? (I think our neighborhood would purchase 4-6 of these between our community garden and all tree planting locations).
- get commitments from isolated properties across the neighborhood for Urban Forestry Street Tree Planting partnership by Jan ’08 deadline.
- get commitment from TROSA for Urban Forestry Street Trees by Jan ’08 deadline.
- discuss delay plantings of Keep Durham Beautiful Trees on isolated properties across neighborhood (outside target planting areas that all have non-potable water tanks) until water restrictions have lifted, unless homeowner has or purchases rain barrel from KDB?
Lexington:
*primary contacts Elise Barrett Carolinabarretts@aol.com and (Patrick & Omyra psmitty42@yahoo.com and omaylita@yahoo.com )
- get spreadsheet of volunteers to Dorothea
- get spreadsheet of homeowners who planted trees to Dorothea
- send thank-you letters (and website URLs) to sponsors and partners
- install weather-proof box/kiosk on water tank with tree forms, and other tree and watering info
- purchase equipment for moving water from water tank to trees (any ideas? ~20 gallon tank on a radio flyer with combo lock?)
- install gator bags at each tree
- two water tanks needed?
- get updated Spanish translations from Christine Hill
Francis Street plantings:
* primary contact Sucheta Mazumdar skmmaz@duke.edu
* target date of tree planting Dec. 8
- confirm planting locations (I am quite sure that we can’t/don’t want to plant in the ditch – confirm with Alex)
- need one water tank
- Sucheta will rally volunteers and or hire help
Chapel Hill Road/opposite YMCA (Proctor Cemetery):
* primary contact Katherine Gill katherinegill@earthlink.net
* target date of tree planting Dec. 15 (TBD by Katherine and Kim)
- coordinate volunteer or paid labor by TROSA to clear trees/prep site
- confirm number of KDB trees (~10)
Chapel Hill Road/opposite YMCA (residences)
* primary contact Kim Hanauer kim.hanauer@gmail.com
* * target date of tree planting Dec. 15 (TBD by Katherine and Kim)
- there is enough room to plant both a small Keep Durham Beautiful tree on private property this winter and a small Urban Forestry Tree on the ROW in fall ‘08
- distribute “comprehensive” form for the private property plantings
- Kim has already obtained signed Tree-Planting-partnership forms for every residence across from the YMCA, except for the apartments
- confirm number of KDB trees
Chapel Hill Road/Anderson St. intersection:
*primary contact Sean Stevens seans@netfriends.com
* target date of tree planting?
- no available ROW for Urban Forestry Trees, so we will be planting only Keep Durham Beautiful Trees here
- bring around new “comprehensive” tree sign up form
- get volunteers
